Title: Cosmic-ray Injection from Star-forming Regions

چکیده
At present, all physical models of diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission assume that the distribution of cosmic-ray sources traces the observed populations of either OB stars, pulsars, or supernova remnants. However, since H2-rich regions host significant star formation and numerous supernova remnants, the morphology of observed H2 gas should also provide a physically motivated, high-resolution tracer for cosmic-ray injection. We assess the impact of utilizing H2 as a tracer for cosmic-ray injection on models of diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission. We employ

Gamma-rays from star-forming regions: from SNOBs to dark accelerators
Observational γ-ray astronomy was born some forty years ago, when small detectors were flown in satellites, following a decade of theoretical predictions of its potential to discover the origin of cosmic rays via the π-decay mechanism. The seventies were a golden era for γ-ray and cosmic-ray astrophysics, with the (re)discovery of the “diffuse shock acceleration” theory for cosmic rays, and the...
متن کاملPhenomenological Modeling of the FIR – Radio Correlation within Nearby Star - Forming Galaxies
We present an analysis of the far-infrared (FIR)-radio correlation within a group of nearby star-forming galaxy disks observed as part of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). In our study we critically test a phenomenological model for the FIR-radio correlation which describes the radio image as a smeared version of the infrared image. The physical basis for this model is that c...
متن کاملThe Eddington Limit in Cosmic Rays: an Explanation for the Observed Faintness of Starbursting Galaxies
We show that the luminosity of a star forming galaxy is capped by the production and subsequent expulsion of cosmic rays from its interstellar medium. By defining an Eddington luminosity in cosmic rays, we show that the star formation rate of a given galaxy is limited by its mass content and the cosmic ray mean free path. When the cosmic ray luminosity and pressure reaches a critical value as a...
متن کاملComplex Chemistry in Star-Forming Regions: An Expanded Gas-Grain Warm-up Chemical Model
Gas-phase processes were long thought to be the key formation mechanisms for complex organic molecules in star-forming regions. However, recent experimental and theoretical evidence has cast doubt on the efficiency of such processes. Grain-surface chemistry is frequently invoked as a solution, but until now there have been no quantitative models taking into account both the high degree of chemi...
متن کاملA study of interstellar aldehydes and enols as tracers of a cosmic ray-driven nonequilibrium synthesis of complex organic molecules.
Complex organic molecules such as sugars and amides are ubiquitous in star- and planet-forming regions, but their formation mechanisms have remained largely elusive until now. Here we show in a combined experimental, computational, and astrochemical modeling study that interstellar aldehydes and enols like acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) and vinyl alcohol (C2H3OH) act as key tracers of a cosmic-ray-drive...
